Conceiving a miniature world for a body slightly oversized for its environment. Or going the opposite way. Changing scales, juxtaposing seemingly inadequate dimensions for contrasting effect. Acting, basically. The body of a child, of a young man, sets the stage. Does this body aim to fill a void or let the apparent vastness of space act?
The dancer’s name is Ethan. He is 16. I’ve known him for over 6 years. I saw him dancing and heard him singing. He moved me. He has the fragility and innocence of young people of his age combined with the power of a horse firmly anchored in the ground.
A set designed in collaboration with artist Constantin Alexandrakis will provide a dream-like setting. Together we will craft an environment from a confetti shower that he has a unique talent for. I was ecstatic about Constantin’s work a couple of years ago. He designs his installations with human scale in mind. Back in 2008, we planned to work on a structure, a kind of swivel arm that could lift a ceiling up and down. And so we worked on space reduction or expansion. Altering dimensions to restrain or let a body loose, these principles are at work for Ethan.
