A video installation comprising three synchronized loops reconstitutes an experiment carried out with two Canadian Elvis impersonators and a Stephen Hawking audio conference during a residency in Gatineau, Québec.
Each Elvis impersonator was encountered separately. He was given an earpiece through which the Hawking audio conference plays and asked to repeat what he hears while trying to give body to the voice. The experiment is conducted and filmed in one take. The Hawking audio conference is a collage compiled from various HAwking source material and speaks about black holes, multiple dimensions of the universe, brane worlds ands the characters that might inhabit these hidden dimensions. Its duration is approximately 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
For the installation, the two takes are synchronized and assigned left and right audio channels. Hawking appears in a reworked static image on a monitor at ground level in front of the wall on which the two Elvii are projected. When the latter have finished speaking, the Hawking image comes alive, begins flickering, and takes its turn at the audio cofnerence. During this time the two Elvis impersonators accompany Hawking in sielnce, swaying in the background to a midi version of Love Me Tender.
